Demolition of Quincy Center Garage

Temporary relocation of the busway, including new bus shelters adjacent to Quincy Center Station, signal the start of the long-awaited demolition phase of the Quincy Center Garage. Built in 1971, the 5-story reinforced concrete parking structure was closed in 2012.
Work Shifts
Construction activities will occur in 3 shifts:

Public Safety
MBTA contractors have begun to install a shielding system (including new steel header beams, hardwood timber, and shipping containers—some double stacked) to protect the public from debris.
During daytime demolition work, Quincy Center will remain open to passengers, with clearly designated work zones to ensure public safety.
To safely demolish parts of the structure closest to the railroad right-of-way, weekend work is scheduled every weekend through October 28, 2018. During these weekends, the station will be fully closed, and bus shuttle service will be in operation.
Noise
Demolition work requires the use of large construction equipment, including cranes, dump trucks, pile driving machines, and mechanical hammers.
The project team is aware that construction noise is an issue for the immediate neighbors and have worked with the contractors on noise mitigation measures, such as:
- Disarming back-up alarms and substituting the alarms with staff to safely move equipment on the site during the night shift
- Identifying newer equipment and procedures that should reduce the noise and vibration generated from our work

We understand this garage demolition will be difficult for abutters and a disruption to passengers. We apologize for the adverse but temporary impacts as we work to bring much needed Red Line improvements to Quincy.
