Building a Better T 2020

Major construction is underway to make the T better, safer, and more reliable. We are accelerating several projects—including station, vehicle, and infrastructure improvements—that will deliver results to riders much sooner.

This accelerated work is just a piece of our full Building a Better T portfolio of projects.

Building a Better T

As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.

Green Line Green Line

We improved service levels for more than 50,000 riders nearly 2 years faster than previously planned with 28-day closures. Each 28-day closure was equivalent to 1 full year of weekend and night closures on the C and E lines.

Work on the Green Line includes intersection upgrades plus track replacement on 24% of the Green Line (10.8 miles).

Red Line Red Line

We improved service levels for more than 62,000 riders 16 months faster than previously planned. This work included:

  • Tunnel leak repairs between Alewife and Harvard
  • South Shore garages work at Braintree and Quincy Adams
  • Repairs on 32,000 feet (6 miles) of Red Line track, including floating slab work
  • Harvard Station brightening
  • Upgrades at Cabot Yard

Track repairs eliminated 1,750 feet of slow zones, improving rider travel times by about 1 – 2 minutes per trip.

Orange Line Orange Line

We improved service levels for more than 66,000 riders nearly 6 months faster than previously planned. This work included:

  • Track replacement (3.5 miles) and systems upgrades at Wellington Yard
  • North Station brightening

Work at Wellington supports the all-new, expanded Orange Line fleet of 152 modern, spacious vehicles.

blue line Blue Line

We improved service levels for more than 25,000 riders 2 years faster than previously planned. This work includes:

  • Harbor tunnel leak repairs and track replacement (2,500 feet) between Aquarium and Airport
  • Station brightening

Track replacement eliminated some speed restrictions, improving rider travel times by about a minute per trip.

Silver Line Silver Line

We improved service levels on the Silver Line 16 months faster than previously planned. This work includes:

  • Pavement repairs at multiple parking facilities
  • Courthouse Station leak repairs

Commuter Rail Commuter Rail

We improved service levels for Franklin Line riders nearly 6 months faster than previously planned. This work included:

  • Construction of 39,000 feet of new track on the Franklin Line
  • Acquisition of 80 bi-level Commuter Rail coaches

The second track reduces wait times to help keep our trains on schedule for more reliable service.

In addition to the accelerated work on the Franklin Line, we continued Positive Train Control (PTC) work on the Franklin and Worcester lines, as well as Green Line Extension (GLX) work on the Fitchburg and Lowell lines.
